Did you hear that? It may have sounded like the special effects soundtrack to a very bad movie. In reality, it was the huge sigh of relief I breathed Friday night around 9:35 p.m. I mentioned a long while back I was busy planning an anniversary celebration. Well, said celebration took place Friday night in front of nearly 160 people - not too bad a turn out considering the audience. And, thankfully, it went off with nary a hitch. Other than a minor glitch with a projector and an audio cable (where's the damn A/V club when you need them?) it all went swimmingly. Those who do this type of thing for a living can sympathize with how I was feeling about two weeks out, but I gots me some skills. This was not my first rodeo. I can do events. By the way, I'm also available for weddings. Anyway, with this out of the way, I can get back to important things like blogging and, oh yeah, paying attention to my wife and kids.
I think it's been a long time since I've given a Little Dubyette update. She's doing well. Just started second grade. Nah, I'm kidding. Just wanted to make sure you were paying attention. She's crawling - forward now, rather than just backward - "don't need to know where I'm going, just need to know where I've been." She's also cutting a mouthful of teeth all at once - hence, she's gnawing on everything in sight - her own hand, her paci, her brother's sippy cups, her rocker, table legs. If she can get her mouth around it, it will be chewed. Oh yeah, note to self: When a child becomes mobile, you must remember you can not take an eye off them. You'd figure this would be a given when it's your second. Not always the case. Hence the pit in your stomach when you see them falling off the bed. In slow motion. And your feet are two cement blocks. The inevitable thud, the look of surprise and then the tears. Good times, good times.
Went to the Sox/Yankees game Sunday night. Despite the loss, it was a good time with 39 and The Buffaloes. It's been a long time since I've sat in the $12 bleacher seats. A gathering of the unruly, unwashed and unabashedly drunk. We were entertained by a small group of 20-something girls who drove up from RI stopping at every available watering hole along the way. A little inside...um...baseball for you on how trashed they were: they started a chant for Julio Lugo(?), eagerly anticipated "the wave," and referred to the Yankees second baseman as Pirate Cano, followed quickly with an "arrrrrrr." Someone said something to her and she replied, "Yeah, I know it's Robinson Crusoe but this is funnier." I admit, it was funnier but not for the reasons she thought. It also was the first game I've been to that a fan made his way on to the field. This eager young gentleman made it out to short where he absconded with Jeter's hat (that was funny). He then made a break for it toward the Green Monster, but was interrupted in his quest to try out his Spidey abilities when he was open-field tackled. Honestly, where did he think he was going to go running full-tilt at a 37-foot wall? Dumb ass.
Apparently, this study is getting some play in the press. Honestly, the results don't surprise me - they really don't. I am far removed from my collegiate curriculum and doubly so from my high school's, but I know that there isn't as much emphasis placed on this particular area anymore. You know I'm right. Anyway, if you're feeling Schoolhouse Rockish and want to test yourself, feel free. I don't expect anyone to post their score or anything. Just remember that the John Locke they ask about was an English philosopher whose influence can be seen in the Declaration of Independence and in the writings of Voltaire and Rousseau. They are not asking about Terry O'Quinn's character on Lost.
btw - I missed 9 for an 85 and I'm okay with that.

9 opined:
I am embarrassed by my score and I got a 4 in AP American History and AP American Government.
Its been awhile.
I am still a moron.
I started to take the quiz, but come on, 60 questions? Is that necessary.
How's that 1 1/2 games feeling?
I'd like to officially protest the ungodly amount of econ questions in the quiz -- there's a reason I was an English major, you know.
(73%)
Oh man, the thud-surprise-cry combo is a killer. I always hope it'll end at the surprised look part of the cycle, but rarely does.
I, too, was killed by the econ questions and by the content of presedential speeches- I missed 12.
Still, I am above average :)
That game rooooled.
Unfortunately, Derek got the last laugh that night.
Just so you know, I'm stealing "The inevitable thud" for my next blog, dare we go for No. 2.
Oh, I wasn't even gonna try that test. I have trouble remembering my way home at night...
But that reminds me - we haven't been to a Dodger game this year. Shame on me. But... there's still time.
I got an 85 too...I should have known better on some but I'll take it. Almost half of my wrong answers were in economics. I dropped an eco class in college rather than risk failing.
